Water Based Finish Reviews

Water based finishes are a result of modern science at its best.  They offer us a finish that doesn't smell up our shops & homes.  When using water based finishes the cleaning or thinning materials just require water and some soap for cleaning.  Thinking about it when using precat-lacquer you have to keep lacquer thinner around to thin and clean.  Water based acrylics & polyurethanes are essentially the same as its solvent based cousins.  In my reviews I tested 3 water based finishes and the results are right up there with wiping varnishes and such.

AFM SafeCoat

Next is AFM SafeCoat.  Scoring 56 pts is another great finish to work with.  The dry time is a little longer than CBR's, and the re-coat time was the longest out of the three.  However this one had the best feel after two sprayed coats.

General Finishes

Picture
Another good water based finish is from General Finishes.  Coming in with 55 pts  the big knock on this one is the drying time.  Taking the longest out of the three, but the nice plus is the info on label.  This one contained the most useful information.
Odor- 9
Surface Prep- 7
Dry Time- 5
Re-coat Time- 7
Cleanup- 9

Final touch- 8

This is where the sheet stock is stored so that it remains as flat as possible.  Dealing with the ever changing humidity conditions poses a real problem for any lumber or sheet stock.
